MANILA, Philippines —No increase in COVID-19 cases has been observed by the Department of Health (DOH) since the holidays.

Sounds good? That’s not all.

Although DOH recorded a one percent increase in COVID-19 cases reported, it was insignificant, said officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire during a press conference on Tuesday.

“Ngayong araw na ito nakita natin na meron tayong one percent increase (Today we saw a one percent increase), but this is not significant for us to say that there is this uptick in cases as a result of the holiday season,” said Vergeire.

“So patuloy natin babantayan ito, we will continuously monitor, and hopefully this would continue to remain at that point or at that level na hindi talaga tumataas ng husto,” she added.

(So we will continue to monitor this; hopefully, this will remain at that point or at that level that doesn’t really increase much.)

730 daily COVID-19 cases projected by Feb. 15

Meanwhile, Vergeire, in the same briefing, said that if minimum public health standards continue to decline and more COVID-19 variants enter the country, the DOH projects around 730 daily cases by Feb. 15.

She said this was based on the DOH’s latest forecast or estimates.

However, Vergeire reminded the public that these projections “are not cast in stone,” explaining that these are just estimates meant to prepare the government’s hospitals and surveillance system.
