Garcia defends decision to put on hold regional training program

/ 06:33 AM April 03, 2012

PHILIPPINE Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia said the project of deploying 450 coaches to the provinces has been temporarily put on hold and would commence once they pinpoint the best people for the job.

“Right now, it’s not doable. We don’t want to make the mistake of picking a coach only to find out that he’s not capable of carrying out the task,’’ said Garcia.

“The screening of the coaches to be deployed in the provinces must be strict because they will be responsible for honing the skills of young athletes there,’’ he added.

Garcia said the proposed transfer of budget intended for the regional training centers to the secondary NSAs has been considered by the agency.

He explained that almost 600 athletes in the training pool would be displaced if the PSC doesn’t augment the funding of NSAs outside the

priority list. /inquirer
