MANILA, Philippines — Saying he is not involved with illegal drugs, the Metro Manila police chief said Wednesday he is ready to render his courtesy resignation, heeding the call of Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr.

In a press conference held shortly after Abalos’ call for the courtesy resignation of all colonels and generals of the Philippine National Police, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) head Maj. Gen. Jonnel Estomoalso enjoined the generals and police colonels of the office to follow his example.

“As the Regional Director of NCRPO, I hereby lead the Team NCRPO generals and police colonels to render our courtesy resignation … for the best interest of the country,” Estomo said.

“Susuportahan ko ito kasi ako, alam ko, hindi ako involved sa illegal drugs,” he also said.

(I will support this because I know I am not involved in illegal drugs.)

Estomo said there are more or less 67 third-level officers in the NCRPO, which refers to the colonels and generals of the police force.

The official said he is also confident that all of the officers would follow his lead and render their courtesy resignation.

According to Abalos, not even PNP  chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. would be exempt from the request for colonels and generals to submit courtesy resignations.

Abalos said that a committee of five would be tasked to review the profile of the officials who would submit a courtesy resignation. While their courtesy resignation is still under review by the committee, the officials would still function in respect to their current assignments.
