MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday committed to expedite the resolution of election cases.
“From now on, all other cases will have to be resolved expeditiously. ‘Yan po ang aming commitment (that is our commitment),” said Comelec chairman George Garcia in a statement.
According to Garcia, it has already released resolutions on several election cases involving Mayors who were disqualified at the Comelec division level and the Comelec en banc.
“Asahan nyo po, when the Comelec decides cases, the Comelec decides cases based on the facts as presented and the law as applicable to it… Kapag binasa n’yo po yung decisions na nilalabas ng Comelec na patungkol dito, it stands the test of all scrutiny, even by the Supreme Court. Kasi sadyang pinag-aralan po nang mabuti “yan,” Garcia explained.
(Expect that when the Comelec decides cases, the Comelec decides cases based on the facts as presented and the law as applicable to it… When you read the decisions that the Comelec issues regarding this, it stands the test of all scrutiny, even by the Supreme Court. That is because it is studied carefully.)
Garcia also announced that starting from the upcoming 2023 Barangay elections, the Comelec will be hearing cases filed concerning nuisance candidates directly at the en banc level for a swift resolution.
Recently, the Comelec dismissed over 1,000 election cases from the 2010 and 2013 national and local elections.
