One more die as shear line rains continue; death toll now at 52 – NDRRMC

The NDRRMC says continuous rain due to the shear line has raised the death toll to 52

MANILA, Philippines — Continuous rain due to the shear line has claimed the life of one more individual, raising the death toll to 52, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Wednesday.

The shear line or the convergence of warm and cold winds has been causing persistent rain – and eventually flooding – in many parts of the country since mid-December 2022.

According to the NDRRMC, the fatalities were recorded in Mimaropa (1), Bicol (9), Eastern Visayas (5), Zamboanga Peninsula (4), Northern Mindanao (26), Davao Region (4), and Caraga (3).

It also said it logged 16 injured and 18 missing persons amid the weather event.

To date, the shear line affected 163,320 families or 640,748 individuals, the NDRRMC noted. Of the figure, 7,114 families or 26,015 individuals were in evacuation centers.

A total of 4,689 houses were likewise destroyed by the weather system with the cost of damage estimated at P100 million, it added.

Agriculture and infrastructure losses, meanwhile, was pegged at P245 million and P262 million, respectively, the NDRRMC said.
