MANILA, Philippines – A total of 49 people were reported dead, while 16 others were injured and 22 are still missing after shear line-induced rains triggered flooding in several areas across the country during Christmas weekend, said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

According to the NDRRMC’s 6 a.m. situation report on Sunday, most of the fatalities were from Northern Mindanao with 25, followed by 8 in the Bicol Region.

Four deaths each were recorded in Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula and Davao Region, three were from Caraga region, and one was from Mimaropa (Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Romblon).

At least 553,983 persons or 141,115 families in 959 barangays have been affected by the heavy rains and floods brought about by the shear line, or the point where warm and cold air converges.

Damage to agriculture and infrastructure ballooned to P243 million and P1.138 million, respectively.

The NDRRMC said nearly P48 million worth of assistance, through food packs, emergency shelters and hygiene kits, among others, have been distributed in communities left devastated by the Christmas floods.
