DOH: Firework injuries now at 25, 14% higher than same period in 2021

The total number of firework-related injuries is at 25 as of Tuesday, which is 14 percent higher than last year, Department of Health officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire reported.

MANILA, Philippines — The total number of firework-related injuries is 25 as of Tuesday, 14 percent higher than last year, Department of Health officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire reported.

In a press briefing, Vergeire said there were 25 injuries reported from December 21 to December 27.

“Last year at this same time period, we had 22 cases. So our cases right now are 14 percent higher than that of last year,” Vergeire said.

The health official also encourages victims of firework-related injuries to visit the nearest health centers and hospitals to get their tetanus shots.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who discouraged Filipinos from using fireworks, urged local government units to designate a common area for the fireworks display to reduce firecracker injuries.

According to the DOH, a total of 128 firework-related injuries were recorded in 2021.
