Shear line rainfall, flooding: Deaths rise to 8; missing now 19

MANILA, Philippines — The number of deaths caused by flooding due to shear line rainfall rose to eight on Monday night, according to the latest report issued on Monday by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC).

Five of the deaths were caused by drowning, one was due to cardiac arrest after the person was rescued. The causes of the two other deaths were still undetermined.

The missing persons were reported in the following areas;

  • Leyte – 1
  • Misamis Occidental – 3

The number of affected families jumped to 27,133 – composed of 100,691 individuals. A total of 9,220 families – composed of 44,672 individuals — were moved to evacuation centers.

The shear line rainfall flooded 68 areas in the following regions:

  • Mimaropa
  • Bicol
  • Eastern Visayas
  • Zamboanga Peninsula
  • Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao

Agriculture damage was now estimated at P59.83 million and infrastructure damage rose to P14.5 million.

A shear line is an area in the atmosphere where warm and cold winds meet, causing rain clouds to form.
