MANILA, Philippines — Get ready for a major overhaul of traffic ticketing come 2023.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) acting chief Romando Artes has announced that the single traffic ticket system will be implemented as early as the year’s first quarter.

Artes announced Thursday that concerned agencies are putting the finishing touches on a groundbreaking plan.

“Sa aking palagay, tuloy na tuloy na po ito sa first quarter sa susunod na taon, 2023, dahil konting detalye na lamang po ang aming kailangan pong ayusin. Magmi-meet po kami second week of January, ‘yung technical working group,” he said in an interview on Teleradyo.

(In my opinion, the single traffic ticket system implementation may push through in the first quarter of next year, 2023, because there are just a few details left that we need to fix. We will have a meeting by the second week of January, the technical working group).

Artes believed that camaraderie played an important role during discussions in the Metro Manila Council (MMC). For him, the COVID-19 pandemic brought local officials together. The MMC is the governing body of the MMDA.

“Unang-una po siguro, ‘yung experience po kasi natin sa pandemya. Talagang doon po nabuo ang Metro Manila Council. Kung inyong matatandaan, sa lahat ng aksyon laban sa COVID, kami po ay nagkakaisa,” he noted.

(First and foremost, our experience during the pandemic. That is when the Metro Manila Council was formed. If you remember, through all of the actions against COVID, we were united).

Metro Manila mayors recently agreed to suspend the confiscation of traffic violators’ driver’s licenses to allow the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to finalize rules on its proposed single-traffic ticket system in the capital region.

Local executives backed the concept of integrating their databases into the LTO, paving the way for a ground-breaking project.
