Transfer of IAS from PNP to DILG eyed
MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla on Tuesday said the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) should be separated from the Philippine National Police and be placed directly under the control of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to make it more efficient in investigating errant police officers.
The IAS is tasked to automatically probe PNP personnel without orders from the PNP chief.
“The internal affairs unit of the PNP should be removed from the PNP structure and placed under the control of the secretary of interior and local government,” Remulla said in a radio interview.
He noted that all the police organizations in the world have separate internal affairs units “because that’s the only way you can check on the abusers.”
