MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) said that it has placed its hospitals on “high alert” for patients with firework-related injuries ahead of the New Year revelries.

“Itong darating na papalapit na New Year, lahat ng ating mga hospitals ay naka ‘high alert’ for all individuals with injuries and emergencies na posibleng mangyari,” said DOH officer-in-charge and Undersecretary Maria Rosario Singh-Vergeire in a written response to reporters on Saturday.

“Ang DOH naman po ay mag iikot sa mga hospitals natin upang siguraduhin na handa ang mga pasilidad at emergency rooms sa potential na pagdalo ng mga firework-related injuries or any form of emergency para sa ating mga kababayan,” she added.

(The DOH will visit hospitals to make sure that the facilities and emergency rooms are ready for the potential surge of firework-related injuries and other emergencies.)

Vergeire also called on local government units and the private sector to join and support the DOH’s “Iwas Paputok (avoid fireworks) Campaign” to reduce the number of firework related injuries and casualties.

Vergeire also encouraged the public to avoid fireworks and instead promote alternative means of celebrating the new year using loudspeakers, horns and even pans and pots.
