6 dead as car hits concrete barricade in Calamba City

Motorbiker dies in Calamba road crash

LUCENA CITY — Six people died early Friday after their vehicle crashed into a concrete barricade along the highway in Calamba City, Laguna province.

In a report, the Calamba police said a Mitsubishi Estrada pickup driven by Jhomel Licas was negotiating a blind curve along the national highway in Barangay Paciano at 3: 40 a.m. when it occupied the opposite lane.

The pickup avoided colliding with an oncoming motorcycle and swerved to the right side, hit the barricade, and turned turtle.

Licas and his six passengers suffered severe injuries and were all trapped inside the wrecked vehicle.

After their extraction, they were rushed by rescuers to four different hospitals.

The report said Licas, 26; Ruel Dimailig, no age; Medel Hernandez, 32; Jonel Hernandez, 29; Angelo Hernandez, 24; and an unidentified male, were declared dead on arrival.

Another passenger, Marvin Hernandez, remained confined to a hospital for further treatment.

The report did not state the personal relationship between the victims, residents of Tagkawayan, Quezon.

Citing witnesses, investigators learned that the vehicle was “traveling at high speed” before it crashed into the barricade.
