LUCENA CITY – The number of active COVID-19 cases in this capital city of Quezon province dropped to only one as of Monday, December 12.

The city public information office (PIO), in a report at 5 p.m., said the only remaining active coronavirus patient is a resident of Barangay (village) Gulang-Gulang. The PIO did not provide further information about the patient.

On March 24, the city was COVID-19 free for a day. Since then, the number of active infections steadily climbed and reached 41 on Aug. 28 but had been declining after that.

As of Dec. 12, the city logged 6,815 COVID-19 cases, 6,583 recoveries and 231 fatalities since the pandemic broke out in early 2020.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the province rose to 74 on Monday, from the 56 recorded on December 1, the data from the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO), showed.

The towns of Lucban, Candelaria, Gumaca and Atimonan had the most active virus carriers with six each.

Only 14 of the 41 municipalities in the province no longer have any recorded COVID-19 cases. Those previously infected in the localities have either recovered or died, the IPHO report showed.

The province recorded 219 COVID-19 cases last month, a dramatic dip from 398 cases in October, the data from health authorities showed.

The IPHO data showed that as of Monday, out of 2,193,771 total doses of vaccines that were administered, only 205,704 qualified residents had booster shots.

The local and provincial health centers have been conducting daily vaccination drives in shopping malls, workplaces, schools, and private and government offices.
