MANILA, Philippines — Various progressive groups marked International Human Rights Day at the Liwasang Bonifacio on Saturday with a unified call for justice.

The Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya), called for the release of a fishermen’s group leader, Elwin Mangampo,  who is currently detained in the Bicol region on trumped up charges.u

Pamalakaya also called for justice for Ericson Acosta, a consultant for the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.

Members of the  Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment (PNE) meantime demanded an end to environmental destruction.

“Itigil ang pambobomba at pagsira sa kalikasan! Depensahan ang ating karapatan at kapaligiran!” the group stressed.

(Stop the bombing and destruction to our environment! Defend our rights and our surroundings!)

Bayan Muna also joined the mass action and pushed for higher wages, as well as justice for victims of extrajudicial killings.

The International Human Rights Day was the day that the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, which established that every human being was entitled to inalienable rights regardless of who they are.
