TACLOBAN CITY — The vice mayor of Carigara town in Leyte died due to cardiac arrest in a private hospital here on Wednesday (December 7) evening.
Eduardo Ong Sr., who also served the town as mayor for nine years, left his wife, Leny, and three children, including the town’s incumbent mayor, Eduardo ‘Ed’ Jr.
The vice mayor was 66.
Ong will be succeeded by Councilor Jimmy Camposano, who got the most votes among the elected councilors in the last May polls.
Councilor Joenlee Larraga, a close political ally of Ong, said they were shocked by the vice mayor’s passing.
“We are all sad. It’s as if we lose our town’s father. Thank you for your service,” she said.
The Ong family announced the death of the vice mayor but did not provide other details.
“It is with deep sorrow that we inform you about the demise of former Carigara Mayor, Vice Mayor Eduardo ‘Boy’ Ong. We will update you regarding the details of his wake and burial. Please pray for the eternal repose of his soul,” it said.
Based on the information she gathered, Larraga said Ong was rushed to a private hospital early in the day due to chest pain and later died at past 8 p.m. Wednesday due to cardiac arrest.
