SAN ANTONIO, Zambales–The coastal waters in this province and nearby Pampanga and Bataan remained free of the harmful red tide toxins, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said Monday, Nov. 21.
In an advisory, the BFAR said the latest shellfish samples collected from these areas showed that all kinds of shellfish, alamang (shrimp fry), and other seafood in these areas are still safe for consumption as long as they are fresh and cleaned thoroughly.
BFAR has been regularly inspecting the waters of Masinloc Bay in Zambales, Pampanga, and the coastal areas of Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Hermosa, Orani, Abucay, and Samal in Bataan to find out if toxic microorganisms that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning are found here.
Red tide takes place when algae or plant-like microorganisms thrive in water, causing discoloration due to a high concentration of toxic and nontoxic algae. INQ
