DARAGA, Albay, Philippines — The municipal government signaled the onset of the Christmas season here Sunday evening when it switched on a 3-kilometer “tunnel of lights.”
The installation consists of 7,000 LED bulbs on a continuous string starting from the intersection of the town center on Rizal Street and running up to the entry point of Legazpi City.
The “tunnel of lights” immediately attracted crowds wanting to take photos for posting on social media.
“When there is light there’s hope. So that’s what we are trying to emphasize. The dark days are over, especially [since] we suffered a lot due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mayor Carlwyn Baldo said in a phone interview Sunday.
The lights were first switched on 2018. But since then they had not been used again, when Baldo was replaced by Victor Perete as mayor.
The municipal government spent P2 million on the project, which includes Christmas decorations and more lights at the town hall and the park.
