MANILA, Philippines — A police officer and the suspect of an indiscriminate shooting in a Quezon City subdivision were both killed while another police officer was also hurt in Caloocan City.
In a statement on Monday, the Quezon City Police District identified the slain police officer as Cpl. Noel Ogano and the injured Lt. Col Jerry Castillo, both of the QCPD-SWAT, as well as the killed suspect Martin Marlot Nuñez, 42, a former Philippine Merchant Marine Academy cadet.
According to the investigation, Nuñez was allegedly under the influence of liquor when he fired a handgun on Sunday morning (November 13) at Bougainvilla St., Maligaya Park Subdivision in Brgy. Pasong Putik Proper, Quezon City, causing alarm and fear among residents.
A witness to the incident sought the help of the Pasong Putik Police Station, which then asked for reinforcement from the QCPD-SWAT.
Consequently, a chase ensued, leading QCPD to coordinate with Caloocan City Police Station as the suspect fled towards the locality.
In the end, the combined police forces found Nuñez at Palmera Homes, Nova East, Maligaya Parkland, Brgy. 177, Caloocan City. There, they asked him to surrender but during the negotiation, the suspect suddenly shot at the police officers leading to an exchange of gunfire and the death of Ogano and Nuñez and the injury of Castillo.
QCPD said it mourns the death of Ogano, lauding him for “his bravery and his ultimate sacrifice in the performance of his duty as a public servant.”
