MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has set up additional x-ray scanners in the Port of Cebu and Port of Cagayan de Oro in an effort to strengthen the detection of prohibited goods at the border.

“The high-performance scanning capability of the mobile container x-ray scanners allows faster scanning through its pass-through mode feature, assuring precise inspection of all containerized cargoes,” the BOC said in a statement.

The installation of the x-ray scanners is part of the bureau’s X-ray Inspection Project.

The Boracay International Airport will also be equipped with a check-in baggage scanner and two hand-carry baggage scanners to assist in detecting smuggled items hidden in the baggage of travelers, according to the BOC.

The agency said it is likewise working on training its staff to augment their intelligence and enforcement capabilities.

“These initiatives are part of the marching orders of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz to enhance employee competence and strengthen security measures to stop smuggling and other customs fraud in the country,” it said. — Kristelle Anne Razon, trainee
