CITY OF CALAPAN, Oriental Mindoro — A student paper of a school-based here was announced as one of the winners during Sunday’s national 44th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) presentation.
The Divine Word College of Calapan (DWCC) Gazette, which was established 38 years ago, clinched the “Best Student Organ-College.” The DWCC is a Catholic institution of higher learning run by the Society of the Divine Word or SVD in Calapan City
“It has long been a dream as a school paper adviser,” said Hans Jansen Dimaala on his social media post, referring to the feat. The DWCC Gazette describes itself as an advocate for “truth, justice, and equality.”
The Archdiocese of Manila, through Archbishop Jaime L. Cardinal Sin, organized the CMMA in 1978, in observance of International Social Communication Day (established by the Universal Church to stress the importance of mass media and to instill a sense of responsibility in communicators).
On October 17, the DWCC Gazette was announced as one of the finalists, along with the Kalasag Magazine, the PNPA Corps Publication of the Philippine National Police Academy, and The Bicol Universitarian of the Bicol University.
“The moderator, staffers and artists extend their deepest gratitude to CMMA for the award and most especially to the Divine Word College of Calapan, its administrators, and its stakeholders, for their support in achieving this tremendous feat,” said the Gazette in a statement.
Representatives of the DWCC Gazette will attend an in-person awarding ceremony on November 23 along with the other winners in the internet, music, advertising, print, radio, and television categories. INQ
