MANILA, Philippines — The Bangsamoro autonomous government declared November 7 a special public holiday throughout the region in observance of Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Day.

“Chief Minister Ahod B. Ebrahim declares November 7 (Monday) a Special Public Holiday throughout the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in observance of Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Day,” the autonomous government said in its official Facebook page on Thursday.

The holiday commemorates the arrival and establishment of Islam in the country when a group of Arabian missionaries led by Makhdum docked in the island of Simunul, Tawi-Tawi to build what is considered to be the first-ever mosque in the country.

The Sheikh Karimul Makhdum is the oldest historical and religious landmark in the country that has been able to survive the elements for more than 600 years.

Makhdum was buried in a site near the said mosque.

November 7 was declared as Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Day by virtue of Muslim Mindanao Act No. 17 of 1991 and Executive Order No. 40 dated November 4, 1991.
