MANILA, Philippines – The city of Muntinlupa has been placed under a state of calamity as it continues to reel from the aftermath of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (International name: Nalgae).

Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon announced on Wednesday that the Sangguniang Panlungsod approved the local disaster risk reduction and management council’s (LDRRMC) Resolution No. 10 s. 2022 on Monday, October 31, which recommends the declaration of a state of calamity in the city.

The utilization of 30 percent of LDRRMC’s quick response fund for the relief, repair, and rehabilitation efforts in Muntinlupa communities affected by Paeng’s wrath was likewise proposed in the resolution.

“Sa mga panahon gaya nito, mahalaga ang mabilis na pagkilos para maisaayos at maibalik sa dati ang mga naapektuhan ng nakaraang delubyo. Hinihingi po namin ang inyong suporta sa hakbanging ito,” Biazon said in a Facebook post.

Citing assessments and reports from various emergency response offices in Muntinlupa, Biazon said two people were killed in the city due to Paeng’s fury.

Meanwhile, eight of the nine barangays (villages) in Muntinlupa experienced floods, with 13 of the 25 risk areas still dampened by floodwater.

At least 5,000 people, or 1,200 families, took shelter in evacuation centers during Paeng’s onslaught. Biazon also noted that there were cases of illnesses logged in the health centers and the evacuation spaces used by the displaced residents.

About 16,871 power outages were reported in Muntinlupa, he added.

A total of 3,180,132 people or 927,822 families nationwide were affected by Paeng’s rage over the weekend, killing around 121 people in the country, the national disaster agency said Wednesday morning.
