MANILA, Philippines — Some national roads in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) remained closed to traffic after the onslaught of Tropical Storm “Paeng” (international name: Nalgae), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said on Tuesday.
In a Facebook post, DPWH-CAR said Kennon Road will be temporarily closed to traffic until further notice.
Kennon Road will only be open for residents.
In Apayao, parts of the Claveria-Calanasan-Kabugao Road, including Salagunting, Rabaw, and Namaltugan sections, remain impassable. Detour road construction will continue on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, no alternate routes were available for motorists who wish to pass through Banaue-Hungduan-Benguet Boundary Road in Ifugao as it remains closed due to halted clearing operations in the area.
Two sections of the Cong. Andres Acop Cosalan Road in Benguet is likewise closed to traffic due to soil collapse.
In Kalinga, the following roads were still closed to vehicles due to soil collapse:
- Mt. Province BDRY-Calanan-Pinukpuk-Abbut Road (Cagaluan-Calanan Section)
- Tabuk-Banaue via Tanudan-Barug Road (Mabaca, Caraw, and Dumanay Sections)
- Lubuagan-Batong Buhay-Abra Road
- Balbalan-Pinukpuk Road (Maling Section)
- Kalinga-Abra Road (Bulalayao, and Pantikian Sections)
Meanwhile, five other major roads leading are now declared passable:
- Marcos Highway
- Baguio-Bauang Road
- Asin-Nangausan-San Pascual-La Union Boundary Road
- Benguet-Nueva Vizcaya Road
- Baguio-Bontoc Road
DPWH-CAR advised the public that close-open situations within the region’s national roads could still be experienced.
Total clearing operations were expected to continue once necessary equipment is available or favorable weather condition permits.
While “Paeng” has already left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), it is still expected to bring rains over parts of the country, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration. — Irish Perez, trainee
