MANILA, Philippines – At least 91,000 people flocked to the Manila North Cemetery to visit their departed loved ones for All Saints’ Day or Undas on Tuesday, according to Manila District Director Brig. Gen. Andre Perez Dizon.
The count was issued by local authorities as of 12 p.m., Dizon said. His initial estimate of the crowd size to INQUIRER.net was 55,000 persons, but an hour later, that number had nearly doubled.
No crimes were reported to police despite the large crowds, according to Dizon.
Filipinos were able to go to cemeteries for the first time in two years, since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, to pay their respects to their ancestors with candles, flowers, and prayers.
Visitors to the Manila North Cemetery have been highly encouraged to wear masks, despite the fact that they are no longer necessary in public.
Unvaccinated adults were also discouraged from entering the premises and unvaccinated children were not allowed to enter completely.
