MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday recalled the kindness and generosity of the Filipino community in Hawaii back in 1986 when their family was exiled there after his father’s ouster from power.
Marcos Jr. expressed his gratitude on Monday during a courtesy call by officials and members of the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii (FCCH) on him at Malacañang.
“President Ferdinand R. Marcos recounted the generosity of our kababayans and the Hawaiian people to his family in 1986,” the Office of the President (OP) said in a Facebook post.
“I wouldn’t be here if not for the compassion and kindness of our kababayans in Hawaii who gave us food and clothes when we arrived because we had nothing,” Marcos Jr. said in a separate statement.
The Marcos family fled to Hawaii after the EDSA 1986 People Power Revolution until former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. died in 1989.
The OP said the President also discussed his administration’s initiatives to keep the nation’s post-pandemic growth momentum.
FCCH, one of the largest and most established Filipino chambers in the United States, supports Filipino entrepreneurs in Hawaii by hosting networking events and business training sessions.
