On Saturday, March 31 at 8:30 p.m., Smart Communications Inc. will be one with the country and the rest of the world in switching off lights as an act of commitment to protect the planet.
Smart pledged to participate in Earth Hour, the annual worldwide campaign organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), known for enjoining households and businesses to switch-off non-essential lights for an hour in order to raise awareness on the need to take action on climate change.
For an hour, Smart will switch off lights in its Ayala Avenue, Makati headquarters, offices in key areas and its billboard sites in Metro Manila.
It is also joining Cebu City government’s daylong Earth Hour activities at Plaza Independencia and the lights-off ceremonies in the evening. Smart is also supporting the night fun biking activity at the IT Park organized by Habagat and Tindak Bisdak Cebu Folding Bike Society.
“Our continued support for Earth Hour is proof that with unity and combined action, we can spread the message about climate change and encourage millions of people around the world to do something to save the planet,” said Smart’s Public Affairs head Ramon Isberto.
“This is important especially in a country like ours, where we’re starting to feel the effects of climate change in forms of unusual weather patterns and natural calamities. We should stop wasting time and resources and do more to live more,” he added.
Smart is also supporting Baguio city government’s Earth Hour observance.
In Cagayan De Oro, Smart will partner with Xavier University and SM City Cagayan De Oro in holding the city’s lights-off activity.
In Davao City, Smart is working with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Green Alliance for Davao, Davao Region Tourism Council and SM Davao in holding the local Earth Hour celebration.
“Earth Hour’s objective is in line with Smart’s environmental initiatives which we implement every year to help lessen and manage carbon emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change,” said Isberto.
