TUGUEGARAO CITY – A fisherman and his wife were found dead in a coastal area in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan on Friday after venturing out to sea despite a gale warning due to Tropical Depression Obet, a local official said Saturday.
Jovitor Biado, who heads Sanchez Mira’s Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), said that rescuers found the bodies of Rene Candinato, 55, and his wife Nessy, 54, both residents of Abulug, Cagayan before noontime.
Rene’s body was found on the shore of Barangay Masisit while his wife’s was discovered Nessy was discovered in Barangay Tokitok. Their bodies were identified and claimed by their children.
Doctors at a hospital where they were taken by rescuers confirmed that the couple drowned.
Biado said they coordinated with their counterparts in Abulug on Thursday (Oct. 20) after the Candinato couple failed to return from fishing despite the gale warning raised by the state weather bureau due to Obet.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 5 a.m. bulletin that Obet is moving away for Philippine landmass, although Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is still up over Batanes and Babuyan Islands.
