MANILA, Philippines — Another 1,379 infections of COVID-19 were added to the country’s total caseload on Wednesday, with active infections down to 23,347, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

These new infections are slightly higher than the cases recorded on Tuesday at 1,196 but still much lower than the daily average infections recorded from October 10 to 16 at 2,188.

With this, the country’s total COVID-19 caseload is now at 3,987,316 nationwide, with 3,900,344 recoveries and 63,625 deaths, based on the DOH’s online COVID-19 tracker.

The tracker also showed that Metro Manila, with 9,463 cases, still leads the list of regions with the most infections in the past two weeks, followed by Calabarzon at second with 4,912 infections, and Central Luzon with 2,666.

In terms of individual areas with the most cases, on the other hand, Quezon City continues to lead with 2,448 infections, followed by Cavite with 1,802 and Rizal with 1,290.

Meanwhile, 16,707 individuals were tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday, which will reflect the tallied number of new infections on Thursday.

The DOH earlier announced that it has already detected 81 cases of the XBB Omicron subvariant of COVID-19, and 193 cases of the XBC subvariant.

The XBB coronavirus subvariant is believed to be highly immune-evasive and is cited as the leading cause of the recent surge in Singapore.

The XBC virus, on the other hand, has been classified by the United Kingdom Health Security Agency as a variant under monitoring and investigation
