Magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolts Davao Del Sur town

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck a Davao Del Sur town on Wednesday afternoon, the state seismologists reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor, which was tectonic in origin, occurred 6 kilometers west of Matanao municipality at 4:05 p.m.

It had a shallow depth of one kilometer, Phivolcs said.

Aftershocks are expected following the earthquake. The tremor is also likely to cause damage, according to Phivolcs.

Intensity III – Libona, Bukidnon; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Maasim, Kiamba, Malapatan, Sarangani; Santo Nino, Polomolok, Suralla, T’Boli, South Cotabato

Intensity II – Alamada, Cotabato; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Maitum, Sarangani; Lake Sebu, South Cotabato

Intensity I – Malaybalay, Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental
