TUGUEGARAO CITY — Still reeling from the effects of Typhoon Neneng (international name: Nesat), which left P60 million worth of destruction in agriculture and infrastructure in the town, low-lying villages in Santa Praxedes in Cagayan were again flooded due to torrential rains since Tuesday, Oct. 18, forcing local officials to suspend classes from pre-school to high school on Wednesday.
Mayor Esterlina Aguinaldo told the Inquirer in an online interview Wednesday, Oct. 19, that the northeasterly surface wind flow and shear line-induced floods were “unexpected and graver than Typhoon Neneng.”
“In barely a few hours, which started at 2 in the afternoon, stopped, and then continued from 4 in the afternoon until night as some villages have been flooded by heavy rains on Tuesday evening,” Aguinaldo said.
Some 100 families from the flooded villages of Portabaga, Salongsong, Cadongdongan, and San Miguel were evacuated.
The town was placed in a state of calamity on Tuesday due to the damage left by Neneng. At least 1,203 families or 3,616 people were affected by the typhoon, which hit most of north Luzon on Sunday, Oct. 16.
