MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday registered only 1,196 new infections, with active infections slightly down to 25,039.
These new infections are much lower than the daily average infections recorded from October 10 to 16 at 2,188, as well as the infections recorded on Monday at 1,938.
With this, the country’s total COVID-19 caseload is now at 3,986,028 nationwide, with 3,897,408 recoveries and 62,581 deaths, based on the Department of Health’s (DOH) online COVID-19 tracker.
The tracker also showed that Metro Manila, with 9,601 cases, still leads the list of regions with the most infections in the past two weeks by a large margin, with Calabarzon at second with only 4,944 infections, followed by Central Luzon with only 2,666.
In terms of individual areas with the most cases, on the other hand, Quezon City continues to lead with 2,462 infections, followed by Cavite with 1,814 and Rizal with 1,309.
However, on Monday only 14,585 people were tested for COVID-19. Thus, the actual number of new infections won’t be known until Wednesday.
The DOH earlier announced that it has already detected 81 cases of the XBB Omicron subvariant of COVID-19.
The new XBB coronavirus subvariant is believed to be highly immune-evasive as people with antibodies against COVID-19 could still acquire it. It is also said that XBB, a recombinant of BJ.1 (BA.2.10.1 sublineage) and BM.1.1.1 (BA.2.75 sublineage), is causing the case surge in Singapore.
