ILIGAN CITY — Legislators of Cagayan de Oro City had approved an ordinance waiving the penalties on taxpayers who failed to settle their tax obligations during the pandemic.
Councilor George Goking, chair of the council’s committee on trade and commerce, said they passed the measure during their regular session on Monday.
The ordinance provides for the condonation of penalties, surcharges, and interests on unsettled business and real property taxes, rental fees of stalls in local government-owned public markets and terminals, and fines for violating traffic rules from 2020 to 2022.
To avail of the condonation, taxpayers must settle the delinquencies by June 2023.
Goking said they expected the measure to help raise the local government’s collection of fees and taxes as taxpayers would be encouraged to settle their obligations, which are now free of penalties.
Mayor Rolando Uy had sought the approval of the ordinance to help businesses struggling to recover after the economic downturn during the pandemic.
