MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday vowed to support and protect the rights of the media, citing its “crucial role” in building an active citizenry that contributes to the development of our society.

In his speech before the Manila Overseas Press Club (MOPC), Marcos said the media is key to improving access to information and increasing awareness of issues that affect the Philippines and the world.

With this, he assured members of the media he would protect their rights under his administration.

“Under my lead, we will serve and protect the rights of the media as they efficiently perform their duty,” Marcos said.

“Your proactive participation in keeping a well-informed citizenry forms part of our collective goal to empower Filipinos and establish a more robust Philippines,” he added.

The President also said he is committed to remaining “open” and constantly communicating his administration’s progress to the media, also urging them to share the government’s efforts and initiatives towards development.

“Whatever difficulties we may encounter from this point on, the government will always be ready to lend an ear and to listen to your concerns and to answer all that you may want to know,” Marcos said.
