MANILA, Philippines— The Mandaluyong City local government unit (LGU) held a vaccination drive on Friday aimed at encouraging public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and conductors, as well as commuters to get their booster shots amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

The vaccination drive was held at Starmall Edsa.

Mayor Benjamin Abalos said that workers in the public transportation sector are considered to be one of the most vulnerable to COVID-19 infection and thus need extra immunity.

A once a week vaccination drive in the same venue is already being eyed and discussed.

Abalos graced the opening rites of the vaccination drive along with representatives of partner government agencies – the Department of Health, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority,  and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

The initiativew is in line with the PinasLakas Booster campaign of the national government which aims to increase the COVID-19 vaccination coverage  by making vaccines more accessible through vaccination sites in workplaces, educational institutions and public transportation hubs. —Catherine Dabu, INQUIRER.net trainee
