DTI wants supply of P70 sugar to last till post-Christmas

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Friday urged the country’s three biggest supermarkets to “stretch” their sugar supply until after Christmas so consumers can avail of the P70 a kilo of sugar.
Trade Undersecretary Ruth Castelo said Robinsons Supermarket, SM Supermarket and Puregold Supermarket, have earlier agreed to slash their selling price of sugar to P70 a kilo.
“We are also requesting these three stores, maybe they can stretch their supply until after Christmas,” Castelo said, referring to the supply of sugar, which these supermarkets sell at P70 a kilo.
According to her, the price of sugar has gone down to P90 a kilo from a high of P105 a kilo based on DTI’s monitoring. But she said “it’s still expensive.”
In August this year, Malacañang announced that the country’s three biggest supermarkets had agreed to slash their selling price of raw sugar to P70 a kilo, from a high of P90 to P110 a kilo.
