MANILA, Philippines – Several student councils at various Ateneo schools, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman and other institutions have called on the youth to wear black 50 years after martial law.

“In observance of the 50th anniversary of the martial law declaration on September 21, 2022, everyone is encouraged to wear black,” posted the De La Salle University student government.

National University student government and Silliman University student government both made similar appeals to people to wear black on Wednesday.

“This Wednesday, September 21, 2022, we remember the 50th year since the declaration of martial law. With this, everyone is encouraged to wear black to show solidarity against oppression and to commemorate the brave Filipino people who fought for their rights,” posted the university.

“Sa ating pag-alala sa mga karahasan noong panahon ng Batas Militar, inaanyayahan ang buong komunidad ng UP upang makiisa sa patuloy na pakikibaka laban sa pagbaluktot ng kasaysayan at pagyurak sa ating pangdemokratikong karapatan,” posted the UP Diliman University Student Council on their Facebook.

(We call on the entire UP community to stand united in the ongoing battle against historical revisionism and the erosion of our democratic rights as we reflect on the horrors committed during martial law.)
