MANILA, Philippines – Residents in Barangay Sanja Mayor in Tanza, Cavite can get a kilo of rice if they turn in a plate full of mosquitoes to barangay officials as part of its effort to combat the rising cases of dengue in the area.

“Siguro po ay natatandaan n’yo pa rin ‘yung kabataan ninyo na ang ang ating mga magulang ay may ganyang style: isang plato na lalagyan ng oil, iwawasiwas sa may maraming lamok at talaga naman pong nakakahuli,” said Barangay Captain Peter Aricayos over ABS-CBN on Wednesday as Tanza had to declare a state of calamity due to the disease.

(Maybe we remember when we were kids, our parents had that style: you put oil on a plate and place it in an area with a lot of mosquitoes and you are sure to capture a lot).

According to ABS-CBN’s report, the barangay has designated ten “kaban” (sack of rice) for the program. Meanwhile, Tanza has set aside P8 million for the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund.

The barangay is also expanding their cleaning programs and handing out anti-dengue kits in schools.
