MANILA, Philippines — Even in their twilight years, three senior citizens from Taguig City have still taken up the challenge of pursuing their basic education.
Mwusews Anthony Mari Diaz, 82, Luvisminda Fajardo, 73, and Erlinda Dejumo, 63, stood out as the oldest among the 1,285 individuals who successfully completed their studies through the Alternative Learning System (ALS) at the Taguig City University auditorium on Saturday.
“Anuman ang iyong edad, posible pa ring makatapos ng pag-aaral,” said Diaz, who had just finished his junior high school education.
(No matter what your age is, it is still possible to finish your studies.)
Diaz then recalled the hurdles he had to overcome as he navigated through the use of modern technology as a new learning method, but he also conveyed appreciation for his teachers who guided him through every step.
Fajardo, who graduated from elementary school, echoed Diaz’s gratitude for their teachers. She similarly thanked her children and grandchildren, who she said, patiently helped her understand the modules and lessons being taught in her classes.
Meanwhile, Dejumo – a registered masseuse and thrift store vendor – said poverty had earlier hindered her from completing her studies, but now she has capped off her high school education through ALS.
Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano, for her part during the completion rites, lauded the ALS graduates and urged them to continue chasing their dreams in life.
“Sana ‘wag kayo tumigil sa araw na ito. Sapagkat kayo man ay grumaduate, simula pa lang ng journey ninyo sa buhay,” she said.
(I hope you don’t stop pursuing your goals. You might have already graduated, but this just marks the beginning of your lives.)
Cayetano also announced that funding for Taguig’s ALS would increase next year.
The ALS, a program initiated by the Department of Education, is aimed toward providing basic and functional learning opportunities for out-of-school youth and adult learners.
