MANILA, Philippines—Senator Panfilo Lacson on Thursday prayed for a “supernatural power” to be able to read and feel the conscience of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

“Grant us Oh Lord even for a second the supernatural power of being able to read the mind and feel the conscience of the respondent standing trial before this impeachment court so we will be spare the agony of acquitting a guilty man, worse, pronouncing the guilt of an innocent person,” Lacson said in his opening prayer on Day 34 of the impeachment trial of Corona.

“And whatever is the outcome of this trial, we pray that the accusers, and the accused and all the participants in this painful exercise will learn to forgive and forget all the harsh and cruel words said and heard for the sake of our beloved country and your children in this part of the world,” he said.

Lacson also prayed for a longer and healthier life for both Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile, who presides over the trial, and Corona’s lead counsel, former Supreme Court Justice Serafin Cuevas. Both are octogenarian.
