TACLOBAN CITY — A local government and a Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) council in two Samar towns have offered cash assistance to help college students in their respective areas.

In Matuguinao town, college students studying outside the town are to receive P600 to help them pay for the rental of their boarding houses.

Mayor Aran Boller said that while the amount may not be enough to cover the payment of the boarding houses, which ranges up to P1,000 above, the town can somehow help the parents of these students.

“This is good for every semester. [So] all college students who are from Matuguinao can avail of this assistance. This is also a way to encourage our students to study well and for them to know that the local government is there to help them,” Boller said.

He said he would make the assistance monthly once they could find enough funds for this purpose.

The town of Matuguinao is considered to be among the far-reaching areas in Samar, where most of its populace depends on farming and copra production.

Most of its college students study in different schools in the provincial capital of Catbalogan City or Tacloban City. However, some are also studying in Manila or Cebu.

Similar assistance was also offered by the SK council of Barangay Lawaan, Basey town.

The SK council has provided P1,000 to 49 college students of the village located within the town proper of Basey.

Marienella Gallaza, the village SK president, said the one-time only assistance aims to help the student-beneficiaries with their school needs.

“The main purpose of this educational assistance is, of course, to help them in terms of their financial expenses with this little amount of money,” she said.

The money used for this purpose was taken from their SK funds, Gallaza said.
