MANILA, Philippines — The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) on Sunday temporarily suspended operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) due to a red lightning advisory.
According to the MIAA, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued a Lightning Red Alert at 2:14 p.m.
“Flight and ground operations at the NAIA are suspended. The alert is a safety measure taken to prevent untoward incidents from happening when lightning is prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger personnel, passengers, and even flight operations,” said MIAA in an advisory.
Operations in NAIA then returned to normal after Pagasa de-escalated the alert level to Yellow Alert at 2:35 p.m, MIAA said.
Pagasa’s earlier forecast for Sunday indicated fair weather throughout the country but with chances of rain and thunderstorms especially in the afternoon and evening.
