MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday said it filed murder and other charges against New People’s Army (NPA) rebels implicated in the death of Patrolman Mark Monge in Samar.
Aside from murder, the also PNP filed a case for violation of Republic Act 9851 or the Philippine Act on Crimes Against International Humanitarian Law, Genocide, and Other Crimes Against Humanity against Jonathan Balimbingan and his four cohorts.
“We keep our commitment to serve justice to our fellow. Those who wage violence must face the consequences of their actions,” PNP Chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said in a statement.
Monge and his comrades were conducting a police operation when they encountered the rebels.
Monge was awarded the Medalya ng Kadakilaan or the PNP Heroism Medal posthumously.
