MANILA, Philippines—A policeman was killed after approaching a motorcycle driver who wasn’t wearing a helmet a little past midnight Wednesday in Navotas City, a Philippine National Police spokesman said.

Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said Police Officer 1 Christopher Estor was patrolling with two other policemen in Barangay (village) NBBN, Navotas City around 12:15 a.m. when they saw a man without helmet and driving a white Kawasaki with license plate 4373 OD.

When the attention of the suspect was called using the police car’s siren, Cruz said the suspect alighted from his motorcycle and stood in a dark portion of the road to allegedly conceal a firearm tucked on his waist, which the police officers noticed.

He said when Estor alighted to accost the suspect, the latter drew his firearm and shot Estor in different parts of his body.

The two other policemen then engaged in a firefight with the suspect, but the latter managed to escape, Cruz said.

He said Estor was rushed to Tondo Medical Center but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician.
