Classes suspended in Quezon, Rizal, Laguna due to ‘Florita’

LUCENA CITY—Due to the possible inclement weather brought by Severe Tropical Storm “Florita” (international name: Ma-on), classes at all levels in public and private schools in Quezon province were declared suspended Tuesday, August 23.

Governor Angelina Tan announced early dawn Tuesday the suspension order on her Facebook page.

“We should prioritize the safety of our teachers and students above all. Be alert and keep safe every one,” Tan said on her post.

The Quezon Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office decided the class suspension after the state weather bureau placed the northern portion of Quezon – Infanta, General Nakar, and Real towns, including the Polillo group of islands – under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1.

In Rizal, Governor Rebecca Ynares also suspended kindergarten and nursery classes in schools in the province.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) placed the towns of Rodriguez, San Mateo, Tanay, Baras and Antipolo City under TCWS No. 1.

In Laguna, Governor Ramil Hernandez suspended on Tuesday pre-school classes in Santa Maria, Famy, Siniloan, Pangil, Pakil, and Paete towns. These municipalities were under TCWS No. 1.

As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, Pagasa said in a bulletin that Florita was over the coastal waters of Palanan, Isabela. It has maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 115 km/h, and a central pressure of 992 hPa and is moving northwestward at 20 km/h.
