MANILA, Philippines — Chief Justice Renato Corona is not yet off the hook even if he admits owning only five properties, and not 45 as earlier alleged by the prosecution team.
Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile, who presides over the impeachment trial of Corona, indicated this on Wednesday, or a day after Corona’s defense team disproved the prosecution team’s claim that he owned 45 properties.
“One killing is enough to send you to jail. You don’t have to kill a hundred people,” Enrile said when asked if the case against Corona has weakened when the prosecutor failed to prove that the Chief Justice owned 45 properties.
“One rape is enough to send you to jail. You don’t have to do multiple rapes,” he added.
But still, Enrile said Corona’s lawyers have all the right to defend their client if it was true that he only owned five properties.
“E kung lima lang ang properties bakit mo gagawing 10? (If he has only five properties, why would you make it 10?)” the Senate leader said.
