MANILA, Philippines—After getting recognition from an international labor umbrella group, a splinter group of the leaders of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) has set up a separate office in Manila, following their expulsion by a rival faction.
The “new” TUCP office of the TUCP leadership led by former Sen. Ernesto Herrera is at Marbella II Building along Roxas Boulevard in Malate, Manila.
The former senator has also begun issuing labor-related policy statements as “new” TUCP president, the first being a call on the executive and legislative branches to provide “immediate relief” to workers in the wake of spiraling fuel prices and impending adjustment in transportation fares.
Herrera backed the move by the House of Representatives labor committee to pursue a P125/day across-the-board legislated wage hike.
The faction led by a rival president, Democrito Mendoza, on the other hand, continues to hold office at the TUCP-PGEA Compound at UP Teacher’s Village, Quezon City.
