THE Mandaue City government has just wrapped up the vaccination of animals as part of its effort to make the city rabies-free by 2013.
The city veterinary office registered a total of 8,475 dogs and 81 cats from the city’s 27 barangays that received anti-rabies vaccine.
The office also recorded three cases of dog bites in barangays Cabancalan, Casuntingan and Guizo, of which the dogs involved were positive of rabies.
City veterinarian Dr. Daisy Penetrante said there was no need to worry since all the victims were vaccinated with anti-rabies immediately after the incident.
Penetrante said they will go back again to the barangays to vaccinate newborn pets.
She said their only concern now is how to contain the stray dogs as they stopped their impounding campaign due to the unavailability of vehicle.
Mayor Jonas Cortes has already appropriated P800,000 for the purchase of a new vehicle.
Aside from the campaign, another project dubbed “Wellness Caravan” had been implemented by City First Lady Sarah Walker Cortes.
The program participated by the city’s departments includes dengue prevention, anti-rabies campaign, garbage segregation, gender development and anti-human trafficking.
In the anti-dengue campaign, the organizers use audio-visual presentation and a puppet show for the children. /CORRESPONDENT NORMAN V. MENDOZA
