RAMON, Isabela—A 9-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother drowned in a pit filled with floodwater in Barangay (village) Burgos here following a heavy downpour, police said Tuesday, Aug. 16.
Maj. Sharon Mallillin, Cagayan Valley acting regional police spokesperson, identified the victims as Marianne and Supremo Contawe, residents of the said village.
Village chief Bernard Santiago said the siblings went to play in the 2-meter-deep pit on Aug. 13. The ground was dug up for the ongoing construction of a warehouse.
The bodies of the children were discovered after residents in the area found the victims’ slippers near the pit.
Police said the warehouse owner would shoulder the burial expenses for the victims. INQ
