MANILA, Philippines — The free learning management system (LMS) Edmodo announced on Tuesday that it is shutting down operations because it can’t keep its services free of charge while maintaining its quality.
“After more than a decade of ensuring Edmodo can stay a free tool for all, we have found that it is no longer viable for us to maintain the level of service you deserve and that we can take pride in ourselves. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to shut down Edmodo.com,” Edmodo said on their website.
According to their website, all of Edmodo’s data will be deleted by September 22, 2022. Should users want to save any files and information uploaded on the LMS, they need to manually import it to their own devices.
“All accounts on Edmodo (Teacher, Student, and Parent) will be permanently deleted after our platform is fully shut down. Not only will your account be deleted but all personal data and any materials you have created within your account will also be permanently deleted,” they said.
The popular LMS has been around since 2008, being used by Philippine educators even before the shift to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Edmodo was a simple platform that allowed me to store and distribute my readings online. Less income for the photocopier stalls on campus, less trees sacrificed for education,” said Ateneo professor Ambeth Ocampo in an opinion piece.
