UP entrance exam may be suspended again

MANILA, Philippines — For the third year in a row, the University of the Philippines may again defer holding competitive entrance examinations, called University of the Philippines’ College Admission Test (UPCAT), because of “logistical challenges” brought about by COVID-19.
According to Francisco de los Reyes, director of the university’s admissions office, the university may not yet be ready to ensure the safety and well-being of more than 100,000 examinees and the more than 1,600 personnel who would administer the test nationwide.
In a notice over the weekend, UP said its presidential advisory council, composed of the chancellors of its eight constituent campuses, has yet to agree on whether to proceed with the UPCAT.
The state university has not conducted the UPCAT since 2020 and has instead admitted students based on their scholastic performance in senior high school.
